Q.
I recall my dad (deceased carpenter) loving his "Yankee ratchet spiral
screwdriver". Why are they no longer available to buy in hardware and
department stores?
A.
I have never owned one
of these style screwdrivers, but one of the electricians that worked for my
sub-contractor really loved his. It made screwing in those annoyingly long
screws on switches and plugs a snap. Two or three pushes and the screw was in
place.
Since the invention of battery powered tools, many people have decided that any
manual method is too much work. In production work, speed and productivity are
essential to maintain the bottom line. For the home owner or occasional handy
person, a plain and simple screwdriver is all that is needed. I own many
screwdrivers, as well as battery powered drill/drivers, and plug-in
drill/drivers. This is a legacy of my life as a remodeling carpenter, and they
mostly just take up space these days.
I have not been looking for tools for quite some time, but I am pretty sure
that you should be able to find the type of screwdriver you are asking about. A
quick Google search for “ratchet screwdriver” brought back a long list of
available products. If you don’t like buying tools online, check any local
specialty tool stores, large hardware stores, or even electrical supply
outlets. Before you buy any tool, make sure that it is built with quality
materials and well designed. The cheap knock-off may be fine for very light
work, but these tools rarely last, and a bad screwdriver can damage screw heads
and make the job harder.
