Q. We are putting up sheet rock and have run into a small glitch. Although the trusses seem quite uniform so we haven't needed butt strips, when running 4x12 sheets down the length of the room, we find that two rows will leave about a 1 to 1 1/2 inch space between the vertical wall sheets and the angled sheets (in other words we have about 8 feet and 1 1/2 inches to cover). Can I use a bull nose or some other closure with jointer? Will this be ok with fire code? Would I cut 1 1/2 inch, 12 foot long strips and screw them up?

A. If I read correctly, you have a sloping ceiling that meets a wall, and the wall (or perhaps the ceiling) is a little shy of covering with 4' or 8' of drywall panel. If this is the vertical wall portion that is 8' 1-1/2" high, just run the 1-1/2" strips at the base of the wall and plan on covering this joint with a baseboard of 3" or more. If the ceiling ends 1-1/2" short of the wall (coverage-wise) then you will need to add the strip there. In this case, you probably want to use the beveled edge only, or the taping will be hard to finish nicely.

If your code requires that you have blocking so that the board can be screwed off on the edges, don't forget to put in the blocking.
