Q. Framing inspection went well and it is time to insulate. We are thinking of having foam insulation installed. I am having trouble finding anyone that can advise and bid on this. Any suggestions as to what you think of foam insulation and where I might go for a bid? And ... if we decide to insulate ourselves, do you have suggestions as to where and when to purchase insulation at the best prices?

A. I've seen them do foam insulation on one of those TV shows, and that's the extent of my knowledge and experience with it. Here is what I think about it. In the Seattle area where I live we get about 5 days a year when it is pretty darn cold and about the same number of days when it is pretty darn hot. Other than that, the climate is mild and fiberglass insulation will provide plenty of energy control. If you build by modern codes, you will have R-19 in the walls and R-30 or R-38 in the ceiling.

I have an uncomfortable feeling when I think about sealing up the framing with foam insulation. Since it is generally damp here, I think about mold growing in spaces that don't have good air circulation. That would be more of a concern to me than any added energy savings by foaming up the walls. The added expense would take a long time to recover. I would guess that you can't find anyone to bid on the foam, because it is not a practical idea in your area.

I have found that you can hardly buy the material to insulate for what you would pay to have the job done by the professionals. Working with fiberglass insulation is irritating. The little particles get into your skin and it seems to effect the way you feel. I always wanted to punch someone after working with it for awhile. Although I would often do small jobs myself, anything of any size I would sub out.

I always had good luck with Washington Insulation. I think they are out of Woodinville, WA but they do work over a large area. If they do not work in your area, just look for big insulation contractors that normally work for builders. They are fast, good, and not much more expensive than buying the insulation yourself.
