Step Nine: To complete the "bath house" that the homeowners had
in mind, they wanted to use Shoji screens. I knew that rice paper wasn't
going to work, so I came up with a solution that gave the visual effect.
I built frames that hold a sheet of Plexiglas and then attached strips of
cedar on each side. The bottom of the frame has a slot that allows the sheet
to protrude about 1/2". I rounded the corners of the plastic, cut grooves into
the decking, applied some wax, and the screens could then be moved back and
forth. The tops of the screens fit between boards. It is a simple task to lift
a screen up to remove it from the groove in the deck, and then out and down
to open the room more completely.
