Step Five: I prefer to attach all of my decking with one nail per
joist and then work over the whole deck adding the second nail. You can get a
nice rhythm going and put in a lot of nails in a very short amount of time.
If you are working with a beautiful wood like cedar or redwood, you need to
take care to not miss the nail or over drive it and leave an impression of
the hammerhead in the surface.
Once the decking is all attached it is time to trim the ends. As long as
the material allows it, I will run my boards long, snap a chalk line, and then
trim the edge to provide a nice straight line. The mill ends of some lumber is
not always square, and it is always hard to get your boards to line up when
you lay down the decking. Since this deck has a curving outside edge, it had
to be run long and then the curve could be drawn on the surface.
